This byway provides so many great views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful City of St. Augustine. There are many great shops and eateries in downtown St. Augustine, what an amazing place. The Byway is primarily along the coast and provides breathtaking views of the ocean the entire way. Be sure to stop at Mango Mangos on A1A, try the Lobster Bisque with an “A Street Ale” (made only a few blocks away), they are fantastic!

The First Annual Environmental Education Fair was held May 1st at University of Floirda Whitney Labs in the Town of Marineland. Over 50 nature exhibitors, 14 speakers and a host of entertainers including “pirates” filled the day with fun learning and excitement of a beach cleanup. The day was exciting for the Byway visitors and complemented other area events in surrounding St. Augustine and Flalger Beach. Visitors can always find cultural and natural events to see in this area rich in environmental treasures and history. Kids love it and remember forever!

Byways place great emphasis on experiencing rather than traveling or just visiting unique places. Friends of A1A has completed its new Cell Phone Audio Tour to share the experience that Byways are as much about stopping as they are about going. Byway travelers are provided with information and opportunities to pause, get out of their cars and absorb the qualities of the place by simply dialing and listening to little know facts about the area. Last week the A1A Byway enjoyed the company of many Florida Scenic Highway leaders at the bi-annual state conferenece held in St Augustine, Fl. Tours of the byway are avaialble to inspire and delight everyone to experience our cultural and nature tourism. Mark you calendars for a return trip to the area in 2013 for the 500th Anniversary Celebration of Ponce de Leon’s landing in La Florida and in 2015 for the 450th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of St. Augustine. Play a day and stay a day on A1A!

A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year as a National Scenic Byway. The 72 mile A1A corridor in Northeast Florida was among the first roadways in Florida so designated in June 2002. With a strong and proud volunteer base, staunchly supportive government and business partners, Friends of A1A moves into its second decade with a proven track record of success for implementing its Strategic Plans. Videos, cell tours, area brochures, newly created parks and greenway pathways are among the treats for travelers visiting our area. Join us for our signature events – golfing, garage sales and environmental education fairs and field trips for kids. Come see for yourself! This year we will be creating a human mosaic in the sands of Anastasia State Park for our aerial art and clean-up event! Watch our calendar for dates and follow us in our e-news, facebook and twitter. Be one of the millions who “remember when they visited famed sites such as the Fountain of Youth” and enjoyed the ambiance of the coast.
