This scenic highway feels exactly like the name implies, and travels straight into the heart of Old Florida. Micanopy is a great place to go antiquing and they have numerous small shops with everything you can think of. It was very cool to see some of the buildings and houses from the movie Doc Hollywood in Micanopy too, where the movie was shot. They have some very quaint little diners and restaurants with good food too. Also, be sure to check out Paynes Prairie Preserve while traveling the highway as well.

The Old Florida Heritage Highway surroundings include Paynes Prairie and Cross Creek [both Florida state parks], well known in literary works and popular imagination for stunning beauty and abundant wildlife. There are also lesser known places [if you're not local]like Rochelle and Evinston, with breath-taking wildflowers in spring time, and unique happenings like landscape plein air events and rail-trail biking or running excursions. The Evinston Wood & Swink Country Store and Post Office surroundings includes a large vegetable garden out back. Also Micanopy, still as quaint as when Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings left Cross Creek to place her phone calls to her publisher out of hearing of neighbors, offers unique shopping, lodging and food. The over 270 birds that call Paynes Prairie home [at least part of the year, even whooping cranes] attract birdwatchers from around the globe, and successful land preservation has created a tapestry of natural places for a visitor to enjoy. Whether walking, biking, canoeing or driving there is lovely scenery to enjoy. “There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.” [Mandela]
